Quarantine Stories – Day 21

Friday, April 3, 2020 – Day 21 of Quarantine

Three weeks down. Now they’re telling us that it will be the end of April at least, though I’m starting to think it will be the end of May. I’m thinking Memorial Day weekend.

Made a store run yesterday. Went to Home Depot to get a few things. (My lawn hasn’t stopped growing just because we’re locked down.) They’ve got it set up so that only 120 people can be in the store at a time (we had to wait in line out front) and have the aisles marked so you can only go one way down them, so you won’t have to get close to someone to pass them.

Though people were still crowded around the paint mixing station, and you have to pick up the handheld scanner to check out. But it’s something, I guess.

We went to Publix after that and got some more stuff. They were completely out of ground beef, so we picked up two meals worth of steak. Plus veggies and some snacky stuff. They have installed plexiglass shields in front of all the cashiers and someone came by and wiped down the pin-pad after I used it.

The bagger was on his own.

Oh, they aren’t allowing anyone to bring in their own bags anymore; you have to use the plastic ones. I guess they’re worried about bringing something in on them.

Meat wasn’t the only thing they were low on. The canned-goods aisle was kinda picked-over, and there are still no paper products to be found. I noticed that they’re now limiting everyone to one pack of toilet paper and one roll of paper towels.

Becky insisted that we had to stop at Kroger as well because she likes the oranges from there better. So we made that stop too.

The governor has now locked down the entire state; no one can go anywhere except for essential items. I doubt they’ll actually stop anyone, but at least its a start. We’ve got around 6,000 cases now, so we’ve almost doubled since Monday.

One bright spot is that I got my Internet upgraded today to gigabit fiber. Though I don’t seem to be getting gigabit. My work laptop only got 500 MB/s after the upgrade, though I think that may be all the crap loaded on it by the company. On the other hand, my gaming laptop seems to only be getting around 600 (though it was hovering near 700 during part of the test). WiFi is of course slower.

I shouldn’t complain about an almost 10x increase in speed (for less cost, actually) but I really wanted to see that counter hit four digits.

Other than that… there isn’t much. The days are starting to run together. I’ve got a lot of stuff I thought I would be able to do during this, but I’m getting none of them done. I need to do more things like this.

I never realized how good it was just to get away for a while. Even the time I spend in my car going to-and-from work was at least time that I had to myself. Now I’m having to stay here with Becky, who feels the need to tell me about everything she sees on the TV.

She’s freaking out about masks and gloves right now.

Camp NaNoWriMo did start today. I wonder if this blog counts? I have an idea for something that is way outside of what I normally write, but I don’t know how many words I can get out of it. Plus I still have my other three active projects that I really need to get caught up on. I really need to learn to focus on those things.

I need to not buy the next season of Destiny. I feel obligated to play it since I paid for it, even though I’m not enjoying it that much anymore.

But that’s me at the end of week 3. On to week 4.
